Five Words – A Spiritual Story About Courage by Guy Finley

Tessa was a beautiful young girl who lived in the midwest, and her sister Claudia by some good fortune, sometime earlier in their lvies (1-2 years) had come to Hollywood CA to become an actress. Claudia didn't quite make it to the actress stage yet, but had become a stand-in for a very powerful and successful actress.

So this was Tessa's great journey to the west to go get to see her sister and not just see her sister but get to have a meal with her in the commissary on the studio life. Tessa was so excited because, as you know when you see people on TV, you think they must be veritable gods and genuises. So Tessa wantd to rub the elbows iwth these people.

One thing I forgot to mention. Tessa and Claudia were almost twins. So when Tessa walked into the commissary there was a maitre'd there, and he looked up at Tessa and he smiled and she wondered why. And he said, You must be Tessa.

Already, I must be important, she thought. Your sister called, she's a little bit delayed and she's asked that I sit you at a table and she'll join you in a few minutes. Please come on in.

Tessa, when she walks into the big commissary with all the celebrities. She wasn't comfortable. All she can think about is how she looks, what she's wearing, is her head held high, is her shoulder out, etc. And she's so nervous that she bumps into the cocktail table, knocks over the drink. So she starts sweating bcause she thinks everybody in the whole place is looking at her.

The maitre'd sees how nervous she is, and he understands it so he takes her hand and says, Come. And he sits her down at a nice table corner booth where she can look out and see all of the celebrities. She's trying to look as cool as she knows how to look, when, because she's so absorbed with trying, she didn't notice a certain silence come over the whole commissary. And what had happened was that moment when she was still absorbed, Stanley Manlessheart, the world famous director, who had a reputation and Tessa knew it for being the most angry creative genius that nobody liked him. Claudia was working on the film that Manlessheart was directing.

And Tessa didn't see him come in, and it's too late until she turns around and he's standing right there at the table glaring down at her. She felt like a bird caught in the eyes of a snake. And he says, What do you think you're doing, lady? Try to remember. She's in a commissary trying to make a good impression. And here's the director dressing her down. What do you think you're doing young lady?!?!? She's thinking about what people are thinking about her. And she's wondering why he's talking to her in the first place.

He says, Do you think I've got all the time in the world?

She still can't say anything.

So you think you're more important than the picture, huh?

Her mind is racing a million miles an hour. He says, You stupid child.

She starts to shrink down in her fhair. She doesn't know what to think, and it's just too much.

You are the most self-serving, all you think about is yourself. You don't care about the budget. You don't care about this.

For a split second it dawns on Tessa what's going on. And not only does it dawn on her, but something else has happened. In that moment, Tessa has a revelation. She has a true epiphany, a true spiritual moment. And what happens in that split second, more or less, is she looks back at him and she sees a rageful face, a trembling mouth, hands shaking, and she looks at him and she sees a frightened man.

At that instant, she says to him, Sir. You obviously have mistaken me for someone over whom you must have considerable power. But you sir, you have addressed the wrong woman. I don't answer to you. I don't answer to you.

You know what big powerful Stanley Manlessheart did at that moment? His eyes went wide, his mouth fell open, the blood drained from his face, and he didn't know what to do except to turn away and walk out of that commissary.
