Constipation often starts with the choices and habits we learn as children.
The good news is that, almost always, constipation is completely reversible, especially in kids. Get some in-depth wisdom and ah-ha moments for healing constipation at every age!
Constipation is a big problem for a child’s physical and mental health.
When your child doesn’t poop every day, it’s like hoarding stinky garbage in their little body.
The microbes that love to hang out in rotten old fecal matter cause problems.
They multiply and damage your child’s gut lining, making them more prone to leaky gut and immune reactions.
They cause inflammation and infection, and jam the signals from your child’s gut to their brain along the vagus nerve – and this can change your child’s mood.
They crowd out the beneficial microbes that calm inflammation, make happy neurotransmitters, and other good stuff.
Constipation microbes really muck things up!
Common Reasons Why Children Get Constipated
Here are some common culprits:
- Dairy is inflammatory and contains opioid compounds that both slow bowel motility (like opioid pain meds do) and is soothing and addictive to the brain.
- Gluten can cause “transient intestinal permeability” (aka leaky gut), and also contains opioid compounds that slow motility. Like dairy, it is both soothing and addictive.
- Chemical ingredients and additives in food cause a variety of problems: sugar depletes magnesium stores, and pesticides used to grow food end up killing our good gut bugs, letting the pathogens get the upper hand.
- Stress causes us to tighten, bracing for what we’re stressed about, and clench our bodies, including our bowels. At the same time, that stress will take blood flow away from digestion, slowing nutritional absorption and motility.
How to Relieve Constipation in Children
Great ways to reduce the culprits above include:
- Add more vegetables in every color of the rainbow to feed a diversity of good gut bugs
- Add raw fermented veggies – start with a strand and work up to a forkful every day!

The Relationship Between Hydration, Nutrition, and Constipation
You’ve probably heard hydration is the solution to constipation.
In traditional Chinese medicine, 5-7am is colon time. Drinking water in the morning (15-20 min before eating) can help flush the colon and trigger a bowel movement.
To get the most anti-constipation hydration power with the least effort, try drinking a big cup of sea-salted water first thing when you wake up!
We used to drink water out of streams and springs that naturally contained minerals (mineral salts) from the rocks and springs.
A pinch of gray sea salt adds essential minerals and electrolytes that match the body’s preferred salinity, so it’s more easily absorbed into every cell and supports so many biochemical reactions.
