Notice the way you’re breathing right now. Notice how fast your breaths are, and how deeply you’re inhaling and exhaling.

Now, when you first noticed your breathing, was it shallow and rapid? Did you have to remind yourself to take slower, deeper breaths?

If so, you’re not alone. Most of us are pretty stressed out these days, and that stress can alter our breathing patterns.

When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones that make both your heart rate and your breathing speed up. It’s part of the innate “fight or flight” response that protected our ancestors in the wild.

But with everything going on in the world these days, our stress response is always “on.” And that can spell danger for our physical and mental health.

One way to help calm your body’s stress response is to slow down your breathing. Taking deep, long, mindful breaths from your stomach is a great way to let your body know that there is no threat and no need to keep pumping out those stress hormones.

Research has found that different colors can affect your mood and behavior in different ways.

Red, for example, has long symbolized power and strength. And it could be because of this that it often stimulates aggressive behavior.

By contrast, yellow represents joy, hope, and optimism. Just looking at yellow can make someone feel happier.

Blue and green, both considered “cool” colors, are calming and relaxing. Blue is the color of intellect and has actually been shown to lower blood pressure. Green, meanwhile, is connected with harmony.

This could be why we feel so much more relaxed and in tune with the world when we take a walk through a green space like a forest. The blue of the sky and the green of the leaves and grass combine to soothe our stress and calm our frazzled minds.

Coloring is just one of many ways to release stress in our lives, and as discussed earlier, lower stress results in better mental health.
