The Relationship Between Food and Mental Health

One of the top strategies for great mental health is also one of the most often ignored.

Many doctors are quick to prescribe medications — and they certainly can help.

But the scientific evidence reveals the truth: Eating the right food is one of the best things you can do for mental health.

A 2020 study found that people eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables — at least five servings per day — were more optimistic, more confident in their abilities, and less prone to depression.

In 2004, researchers from Japan, Sweden, Greece, and Australia, teamed up to find out if there is any one food that is consistently linked with a longer life span.

The Cost of Poor Nutrition

Would you walk away from inheriting a fortune?

That’s exactly what John did.

Starting at an early age, John Robbins was groomed to be the heir to the multi-billion dollar Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire, which had been founded by his dad and his uncle.

But John walked away from this future “paved with gold and ice cream” and devoted his life to educating people about healthy eating.


In his early 20s, John discovered the truth about sugar and processed foods. He didn’t want to sell a product that could undermine anyone’s health.

Of course, one ice cream cone isn’t going to kill anybody, but the more you eat, the more likely you are to have a heart attack — like John’s uncle Burt Baskin did at just 54 years old.
